In this paper the weight of the suprarenal gland of lepers is described. The materials are obtained in Zensei-Byoin (Leprosorium at Higashimurayamamura, Tokyo) and Kuryu-Rakusen-Yen during the past 7 years from 1933 to 1939.
The number of suprarenal glands studied here is 420 (258 males and 122 females). They are measured within 24 hours after death.
The results obtained could be summarized as follows :
1) The weight of the suprarenal gland of lepers is on the avarage 4.54 g, in male and 4.13 g. in female.
2) In both sexes the weight of suprarenal gland of the lepers is usually about two thirds of those of non-leprous persons.
3) The age at which the suprarenal glands of the lepers reach the maxi mum is from 15 to 19 years in male, and from 25 to 29 in female.
4) There exists a prominent difference with respect to the weight of the suprarenal glands between cases of lepra tuberosa and lepra nervo-maculosa, the gland of the former being considerably lighter than that of the latter.
5) There exists a close correlation between the suprarenal gland and the body length or weight. In cases in which the body length or the body weight is larger, the suprarenal body is correspondingly heavier.
6) There is found no difference in the weight of suprarenal gland between both sides in either sex.
