The present work is undertaken to know the kidney-weight of lepers. The materials are selected from 1284 lepers, which were dissected in the Zensei-Byoin (Leprosorium at Higashimurayamamura, Tokyo) during the past thirty years from 1909 to 1938, and also in the Kuryu-Rakusen.Yen (National Leprosorium) during seven years from 1932 to 1939. 2256 kidneys (1756 for males and 506 for females, aged from 15 to 75 years) are investigated after excluding those with suspected abnormalities or complications within 24 hours after death.
The results obtained could be summarised as follows :
1) The kidney-weight of lepers is on the average 138.8g. in males, and 127.4g. in females.
2) In both sexes the kidney of the lepers is usually heavier by about 4.0g. than that of healthy persons.
3) The age, at which the kidney of the lepers reaches to the maximum, is from 30 to 34 years in males, and 25 to 29 in females.
4) There exists no difference between cases of lepra tuberosa and lepra nervo-maculosa with respect to the kidney-weight.
5) There exists a close correlation between the kidney-weight and the body-length or weight. In cases in which the body-length or the body-weight is larger, the kidney is correspondingly heavier
6) In both sexes the kidney is generally heavier on the left side than on the right.
