A synopsis of the family Hedwigiaceae for Brazil

Abstract

  This study aims to document the morphological and taxonomic diversity of the Hedwigiaceae in Brazil. Based on the examination of herbarium specimens, personal collections, and literature records, this taxonomic review documents seven species of Hedwigiaceae in Brazil. We report Braunia exserta Müll.Hal. as new to Brazil. Identification keys, diagnostic descriptions, and illustrations are provided for the seven recognized species: B. exserta, B. plicata (Mitt.) A.Jaeger, B. subincana Broth., Hedwigia nivalis (Müll.Hal.) Mitt., Hedwigidium macrocalyx (Müll.Hal.) Paris, H. rhabdocarpum (Hampe) A.Jaeger and H. serrae (Müll.Hal.) Paris. We exclude the record of H. ciliata (Hedw.) P.Beauv. and designate six lectotypes.
