The forest vegetation of the area of Hiraoka Environmental Science Laboratory and its surrounding area, which situated in eastern part of the Tama Hill, was investigated in order to make an actual plan for conservation and to make the followup check of the forest. Originally the forest in the area was dominated with Phyllostachys heterocyla f. pubescens and a total 132 species were found; the trees were mainly of the evergreen, and 26 trunks of trees were measured 100 cm or more in circumference. In the first year after the construction of the laboratory, the vegetation changed into that similar to the cutover land in warm-temperate district with conspicuous growth of summer-green plants. 102 species were newly introduced to the area after construction, among which those of the annual semi-cryptophyte of gravity dispersal type and the biennial semi-cryptophyte of anemochory type were conspicuously increased in number.
