Abstract
Fossil pollen assemblage of Furuya mud bed, middle to late Pleistocene, central Shizuoka, was analysed, which was divided into two zones and subdivided into five zones. From the lowest one to Zone II, recognized were the coniferous to deciduous forests of the Cool Temperate Zone containing many of Alnus, Pinus, Abies, Picea, Tsuga, and Tilia; and the climatic condition was slightly cooler than the present.
In the Zone I, Lagerstroemia, an element in the south of the Warm Temperate Zone, increased suddenly; and Quercus (Lepidobaranus), cf. Ulmus-Zelkova also increased. Established were warm temperate forests in coastal region and temperate deciduous and broad-leaved forests in inland region; and the climatic condition was warmer or slightly warmer than the present. From I-C subzone, warmness gradually declined.
This fossil pollen assemblage has some resemblance to the one at the marine terrace deposits in Southern Kanto District or Tokai District but is different in that so many Lagerstroemia and less Cryptomeria are recognized in Shizuoka.
