A possibility of a rapid generation scheme was examined using plants transplanted before and after overwintering to analyze genetic characteristics in Japanese bunching onion. An umbel formation rate befor and after overwintering was 80.3-91.7% and 71.4-91.7%, respectively. Flowering rates of plants transplanted after the overwintering was as follows. Wax, waxless and segregate lines showed 91.7%, 71.4% and 89.3%, respectively. Therefore, a significant difference between wax and waxless was recognized. It is concluded from the experiment that the rapid generation scheme is possible because the umbel formation and the flowering rate are high after the overwintering at the juvenile stage in Japanese bunching onion.
