Introduction of “Uncertainty of measurement Part 3: Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM:1995)”

Abstract

This paper reports the history, the content, and the future development of the standard ISO/IEC Guide 98-3 “Uncertainty of measurement Part 3: Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM:1995)”. This document, which introduces measurement uncertainty as the index for the reliability of measured values, was made based on the recommendation from the working group on the statement of uncertainties in Bureau International Poids et Measures. The guide of JCGM 100 “Evaluation of measurement data — Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement” revised in 1995 after the first version in 1993 was published also as the ISO/IEC guide. While the standard showing key procedures to evaluate measurement uncertainty has been referred to as “GUM”, the new perspectives for the GUM has been presented.
