Abstract
A computer-aided interactive system of named WRED (Welding REsidual stress and Deformation analysis system) had been developed, which enables the structural designer and manufacturing engineer to conveniently analyze residual stresses and deformations of various structural components. In this paper, the residual stress characteristics of ceramic coated components prepared by some processes were studied using the WRED system. The residual stresses are calculated by elastic analysis using a concept of inherent strain. The experimental results for CVD (chemical vapor deposition) coating process are in good agreement with the calculated results by the WRED system. However, the experimental results for PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating process and plasma spraying process can not be always estimated by the WRED system. Also, the stress relaxation characteristics of graded coatings are investigated for the effect of number of graded layers.
