An effect of per-loading on fracture toughness was studied by using a three-point bending test method on a steel of 50kgf/mm2 strength. Results are summerized as follows.
    (1) In the case of low fracture toughness, preloading gave little influence on the critical COD, so that preloading is beneficial to safety.
    (2) In the case of high fracture toughness, perloading made the critical COD decrease by the nearly same amount as COD produced by preloading. Preloading is not necessarily beneficial.
A possible mechanism was discussed as to why preloading gives the effect on the critical COD.

A computer-aided interactive system of named WRED (Welding REsidual stress and Deformation analysis system) had been developed, which enables the structural designer and manufacturing engineer to conveniently analyze residual stresses and deformations of various structural components. In this paper, the residual stress characteristics of ceramic coated components prepared by some processes were studied using the WRED system. The residual stresses are calculated by elastic analysis using a concept of inherent strain. The experimental results for CVD (chemical vapor deposition) coating process are in good agreement with the calculated results by the WRED system. However, the experimental results for PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating process and plasma spraying process can not be always estimated by the WRED system. Also, the stress relaxation characteristics of graded coatings are investigated for the effect of number of graded layers.

The ‘belt’ type high pressure apparatus, which has widely been used industrially for the synthesis of diamond and cBN in the pressure and temperature ranges of about 6 GPa and 1600°C, was modified to increase the pressure and temperature to the regions of 8 GPa and above 2000°C for the routine experiments of the new synthesis research on diamond and cBN. This was realized by adopting the optimum values of the shape parameters in the central parts of the apparatus and the press fitting conditions. An apparatus with the bore diameter of 30mm was constructed and used successfully in more than 600 runs for the synthesis, crystal growth and sintering of diamond and cBN in the 8 GPa pressure region.

The purpose of this study is to develop an ultrasonic method for measuring the actual thickness of zircaloy-2 alloy tube with the thin surface oxide layer using a high frequency broadband foccused transducer which can produce a short-duration echo.
The main algorithm of signal processing technique for thickness measurements deals with the problem for separating of echoes very close to each other and calculating of the propagation time between these two echoes by using the cross-correlation method. A computer-implemented ultrasonic method based on this algorithm was established in this study. The results of thickness measurement in metal-wall of zircaloy tubes which were artificially plasma-sprayed with ZrO2 were presented. The comparision of ultrasonically measured thickness with the metallographically determined ones showed that the proposed method has a reasonable accuracy for the measurements of actual thin metal-wall thickness in the oxided zircaloy tubes.

In recent years gas holders have become larger in capacity and higher in pressure in order to use the gases which are accompanied in the steel/manufacturing processes effectively. So the strength under seismic loads has been one of the key probrems of the structure, which are constructed on soft ground.
This paper shows the structural verification under seismic loads by taking the interaction of soil and structure into consideration.
    The following conclusions are obtained.
    (1) The maximum axial force of stanchions during the dynamic response which interacts the soil foundation is estimated to be smaller than that of the static acceleration method stipulated by normal rules.
    (2) A small plastic deformation which may occur at the base of the stanchions under large seismic loads reduces the dynamic response of the whole structure and keeps a safety margin of structural endurance.

Since 1979, ISO/DIS 6718, “Busrting discs and bursting disc devices” had been discussed in ISO/TC 153/SC 3/WG 3 and TC 185/SC 2, and it was published in 1985 as “First edition-1985-09-01”.
Many proposals were submitted by member countries after that time, and ISO/TC 185/SC 2 has been discussing them every year.
This report is written about the recent trends of their resolutions, the relation of JIS B 8226, “Bursting discs and bursting disc devices” and future problems etc.
