Currently, the electrification and energy (electric power) system revolutions are progressing simultaneously in the automotive industry. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of electric vehicles (EVs) not only for transportation, but also for household and community energy management. Smart charging and discharging of EVs can contribute to reducing electricity costs and stabilizing the electricity supply. This paper introduces research cases related to the utilization of EVs in smart grids, which are IT-based power transmission and distribution systems, and social implementation efforts in Japan and abroad.
