In the present paper, I examine the Meditation on the Lotus Sutra 法華三昧, ascribed to Zhiyi 智〓 (538-597), in the Tiantai sijiao yi 天台四教儀 (Tiantai Fourfold Teachings) written by Ch'egwan 諦観 in Korea.
The Meditation on the Lotus Sutra is considered the Complete and Sudden Practice 円頓止観 by Ch'egwan. It is Viewing Inconceivable Reality 観不思議鏡 which is the First stage of the Ten Modes of Contemplation 円頓止観 of the Complete Doctrine 円教.
Concerning the Viewing Repentances 懺悔観, Ch'egwan advocated the practices of the Five Dimensions of Repentance 五悔 in the Grade of Joy from According With the Truth, the First Stage of Five Preliminary Grades of Disciples.
He placed the Repentance for Six Sense Organs 懺悔六根, Imploring 勧請, Rejoicing 随喜, Merit-transference 廻向 and Making vows 発願, which were initiated by Zhiyi, in the Auxiliary Practices 助道行 of the Complete Doctrine.
He also advocated the Five Dimensions of Repentance from the Stage of the Five Preliminary Grades of Disciples to the Stage of Preliminary Enlightenment 等覚位. After all, he stood on the side of Method of Repentance of the One Vehicle 一乗懺悔法 of the Meditation on the Lotus Sutra.
