A new planar transformer with bulk ferrite core is described. We call this new transformer 'Planar Pot Transformer (PPT)'. PPT having planar coils with high aspect ratio was fabricated by electroplating in order to reduce copper loss. In this paper, design considerations, fabrication and fundamental characteristics of PPT are reported. The fabricated PPT is 8.5mm in width, 8.0mm in length and 1.3mm in hight, showing a DC breakdown voltage of 1kV. The efficiency of PPT is over 85% at 500kHz-1MHz (Mu-Zn ferrite core) and over 90% at 3-10MHz (Ni-Zn ferrite core). A high reliability insulating relay driver was realized by using PPT. Relay driver efficiencies of over 60% at 3-10MHz could be obtained with a Ni-Zn ferrite core.
