This paper covers the design and implementation of our context-aware passenger support system in which passengers are provided with location-based guidance throughout their travel itineraries. The system consists of itinerary-management server, route-choice support system, mail server, automatic fare collection gates located at railway stations, and cellular phones which are used as user terminals. Experimental operation of the system has been carried out in Tokyo. The questionnaire survey shows that the system is effective enough to be able to support novice passengers who use railways less frequently. We also summarize several technological challenges required for putting our passenger support systems into real operation.
