Abstract
Several design techniques have been applied to the optimization of a wide range of electrical machines. However, most of these applications have been restricted to optimizing a part of the whole region of electrical machines. It is said that fully automatic design is to determine the topology as well as the shape of the whole region of electrical machines and to start from empty space. For this purpose, this paper proposes a method for the design of electrical machines by optimizing material distribution using Genetic Algorithm and local search method. Design region is discretized into a finite element mesh and the material of each element is set to a gene in the chromosome. The proposed method is applied to the design of a brushless DC motor. The rotor of brushless DC motor is designed to produce a large average torque.
