Abstract
The explanation of the phenomena of the sudden short circuit of alternators is first briefly considered. New methods, developed by the author, for the calculation of the maximum sudden short circuit current from the design data of the alternator is explained.
The formula of the belt leakage reactance of the alternator, developed by the author, is also shown.
Test results relating to the short circuit of 12K.V.A., 50K.V.A., 8700K.V.A. and 9375 K.V.A. alternators are compared with the calculated results from the design data.
The paper is divided into the following self-explanatory sections: I-The phenomena of sudden short circuit of alternators. II-Method of calculation of the maximum sudden short circuit current. III-Belt leakage of alternators. IV-Sudden short circuit tests. V-Comparison of the leakage reactances in the armature and field circuit. VI-Conclusions. VII-Description of machines.
