This paper describes my trajectory on “the cultivation of closeness to the field and the practice” as a researcher of educational technology. So far, I have approached the field and the practice in various positions such as a third party, a practitioner, a researcher and a practical researcher.

There have been four phases in my trajectory. First, I participated in the field and practice as a third party who did not intervene by changing the practice within the setting. In the second phase, as a practitioner, I tried to improve the practice or/and solve problems by putting the theory of educational technology into practice when I was working as an oversea volunteer. In the third phase, I approached the field and practice as a researcher of educational technology who developed instructional methods and materials. In the last phase, I joined the field and practice as a practical researcher who designed the practice under collaboration with the members in the setting. To illustrate more clearly my role as a practical researcher, I describe how I approached the field and practice based on a case study of overseas fieldwork conducted in India in 2012.

Through this examination, I found that over time I changed the way in which I approached the field and the practice. This process of change can be re-constructed by following my experience and career objectives.
