Analyzing books covered in the Brandon List should assist libraries in their book selection policy. This study based on Brandon Lists from the 1st (1965) to the 13th edition (1989).
The following results were obtained:
1) The number of monographs covered in the list increased from 358 in the 1st edition to 607 in the 13th edition, the number approximately doubling.
2) During the 24 years between the 1st edition and the 13th, six subjects were modified, six subjects were deleted and 10 new subjects were added.
3) As modern medicine has come more compartmentalized, subject coverage and the number of monographs included in each have been changed considerably.
4) The number of serials covered in the list gradually increased from 123 titles in the 1st edition to 141 titles in the 13th without any significant change in content.
5) Japanese medical libraries have owned monographs covered in the Brandon List amounting to an average of less than 20% of their total collections.
