Reprint requests are a means of communication among scientists, although some scientists request reprints using preprinted postcard with no personal message and ignore the function of libraries. Many scientists have been contributing their opinion to the correspondence columns of scientific journals concerning the issue of reprint requests.
This survey involved 6 journals, the BMJ, JAMA, Lancet, Nature, the N Engl J Med and Science from 1965 to 1990, and 105 letters were published during this period. Fifty-six letters were opposed to reprint requests, and 43 were favored them. Sixty-two letters referred to the expenses of reprint requests. The 38 made mention of libraries, and 67% of that requested reprints by choice described libraries. They do not find satisfaction in library services and prefer easy procedures.
