While the longitudinal distribution of centerline shrinkage has been discussed in many literatures, substantial information on the lateral distribution of centerline shrinkage is rarely found. The authors made some research on this problem in steel castings and on the mechanical properties of such castings. The results obtained are as follows.
(1) The centerline shrinlage width is proportional to the casitng width on steel castings, whose shape is plate, bar and hollow cylineber.
(2) Tensile strangth and fatigue strength of casting containning centerline shrinkage are 90% and 80% respectively of those of sound casting, when the diameter of machined specimen is over 0.8 of the diameter of cast bar.
