This report describes the gas chromatographic method for the determination of gas from sand mould.
Samples were melted and cast into sand mould in a high frequency induction furnace, and the gas from the sand mould was directly carried into a gas chromatograph without a separation column. Hydrogen gas is extremly sensitive in argon carrier gas, and so the responses obtained wes regarded as that of hydrogen gas. (H2 gas is determined) The volume of carbon oxide and methane gas-Vco, VcH4-is calculated by the following equation:
Vco= vco⁄(vH2) ×VH2
VcH4= vcH4⁄(vH4) ×VH2
where VH2 is the volume of total hydrogen gas. vco/vH2 and vcH4/vH2 were obtained from the composition analysis of gas from sand mould. H2, CO and CH4 gas volume were determined with various types of sand moulds such as day and bentonite bonded sand mould, CO2 mould, cement mould, self-hardding mould, shell mould and oil sand mould.
