Effects of Ni, Mo, Co, Si, Cr and C additions on fracture toughness of as-cast Fe-18%Cr-3.3%C alloys were studied by double torsion bending test. The fracture toughness is significantly affected by carbon content. An increase in carbon content from 2.97% to 4.11% results in 30% decrease in fracture toughness. Additions of 1∼4.9%Ni and 0.76∼3.26%Mo increase the fracture toughness 10∼25% and 5∼15% respectively. 0.5∼1.6% additions of cobalt, however, lower the fracture toughness from 85.0 to 73.8 kg/mm3/2. Chromium iron of 24.8%Cr has 30% higher fracture toughness than that of 14.85%Cr with the same carbon level.
