The sound velocities during solidification of PbSn and Bi-Sn alloys have been studied in order to develop a new material processing by applying ultrasonic techniques. First, a pulse transmission system for measuring the sound velocity in high temperature melt is constructed, and the validity of the system is verified. Next, sound velocities of PbSn melts and Bi-Sn melts are measured at the temperature ranges of 20°C to 300°C. Finally, the temperature dependence of sound velocity during solidification process of binary eutectic alloys is clarified in relation to the liquidus, solidus, and eutectic line on the phase diagrams.
