What information about the Qing dynasty was disclosed to the Russian society in the first half of the 18th century? To answer this question, this paper examines the articles about the Qing embassies to Russia in the 1730s, which appeared in the Saint-Petersburg News (Sankt-Peterburgskie vedomosti), the only Russian newspaper printed in the first half of the 18th century. First, I explain the characteristics of this newspaper and then analyze the number of articles on the Qing dynasty by year and indicate the cities from which the information came, showing that the number of articles and the cities from which the information came have changed significantly since 1728. Next, to clarify the reason for the changes, I examine the contents and sources of the articles on the Qing dynasty embassies and consider why the Russian government made the information public. Finally, I discuss why the articles on the Qing dynasty embassies to Russia were published during that period, using contemporaneous historical documents as clues. In this way, I will show concrete cases of what information on the Qing dynasty was disclosed to the Russian society in the 1730s, how the intentions of the Russian government were reflected in the information disclosed, and how the conclusion of the Treaty of Kyakhta impacted the disclosure of the information in Russia.
