The authors experienced 764 cases of toxemia of late pregnancy at the 2nd Tokyo National Hospital during the period of six years (1951-1956). The cases were classified into pregnancy hypertension, pregnancy albuminuria, pregnancy edema, pregnancy kidney, preeclampsia and eclampsia, according to their etiological natures.
1. The occurrence of toxemia of late pregnancy was 19.3%. Numbers of delivery increased every year, while the occurrence of toxemia of late pregnancy decreased slightly.
2. Rate of premature-births and rate of neonatal mortality in cases of toxemia of late pregnancy were equal to that of normal pregnancy, however, rate of death-births in the former was 4.7%, which is more than three times as much as that of the latter.
3. The rate of recurrence of toxemia in the late pregnancy was 18.6%.
4. Ophthalmoscopical examination revealed that 63.20 of the toxemia cases of late pregnancy had some findings at their ocular fundi.
