1. Four hundred and seven cases of fracture of the forearm were treated in the Orthopaedic Department of Matsumoto National Hospital for 14 years from 1952 to 1966.
Sixty one cases in the total of 407 were studied as to the development and complaints of pronator and supinator contractures.
2. The contractures were found in the cases of having disturbance of the proximal and distal part of the radio-ulnar joint and the axis of forearm rotation, Soft tissue disturbance of the forearm would also be considered to be caused the contracture.
3. Pronation and supination of the forearm is only one part of the associated forearm motions, so that it would be difficult to discuss only pronation and supinations appeals. The degree of contracture and complaint would not be parallel.
4. Pronator and supinator contractures could be compensated by rotations of the shoulder and by using another hand. Patients complaints were getting decreased when the time came.
In general speaking, it would be coursed more severe complaints if the cases suffered from the effective hand, senile cases and the cases having pain.
6. Measurements of the 127 cases of normal people by Dr. Marumo's angle gauge were as follows:
pronation 51°
supination 126°
range of motion was 117°
There is no difference of this value in ages and sex, but about 9% difference was found in each side of same case.
