Abstract
From January 1, 1984 to December 31, 1998, 104 neonates underwent 109 cardiovascular operations. Results of operations were divided into three period, the first stage, 1984-1988, the second stage, 1989-1993 and the third stage, 1994-1998. 62 neonates were performed open heart surgery, consisted of 16 cases with the 1st stage, 18 cases with the 2nd stage and 28 cases with the 3rd stage. Although total numbers of operations increased recently, the incidence of neonatal open heart surgery decreased. One reason of the decrease in neonatal cardiovascular surgery was a decrease in total birth rate. Another reason was relative decreace in the neonatal open heart surgery, as total cases of operations greatly increased in the 3rd stage. The mortality of neonatal open heart operations was 50% in stage I, 44% in stage II, and 21% in stage III, Surgical results were more improved in the 3rd stage than the 1st and 2nd stage, that improved prominently in the shock state. Recent advance in noninvasive diagnosis of congenital heart disease made us possible to operate neonates in better preoperative condition. Postoperative management was well developed.
