We should pay a careful attention, in case of surgical treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, to finding pulmonal functions of patient's lungs, especially the one which is not suffered.
To find out the pulmonal functions of patient's lungs prior to operation is very useful deciding the method of operation and the extent thereof, in inferring the power of patient's lungs after operation and in estimating his working ability beforehand.
We made, for trial, a handy apparatus (see Fig. 1) to measure simultaneously the vital capacities of lung-lobes of lungs. In this apparatus, two pieces of semicylinder (30cm in diameter, 15cm in height, 3500cc in volume) connected to each other and an air-pipe fixed to each semicylinder, are placed in the water pot. If air is let into the semicylinder through the air-pipe, the apparatus will rise upon the water-level, so that the quantity of the air let-in can be measured by the graduation marked on the surface of the semicylinders. This graduation is arranger to give the figures converted to the figures at the water-temperature. At the inlets of the air-pipes, safety-valves are fixed, which adjust expiration and aspiration. Besides the above mentioned apparatus, we are using the bronchial catheter that can be also used as a bronchoscope. This has done much in bronchoscope tests and also in measuring vital capacities of lungs.
This paper is to report the results of our measurements on several clinical cases with these apparatuses and to certify that they are handy ones and very useful ones.
