In recent years, traditional crafts have seen reduced opportunities for daily use due to changes in social structures and lifestyles. To promote the inheritance of traditional culture, Hiwadabuki patterned panels were developed. These panels utilize Hiwadabuki (cypress bark roofing), one of Japan's traditional architectural techniques-to recreate its unique visual rhythm and texture. The purpose of this study is to consider the Hiwadabuki pattern as an example of a design symbolizing traditional skills and to clarify the characteristics of preferred frames for the development of art panels featuring this pattern. Using frames in 5 colors and 5 widths, we investigated preferences regarding color and width. Results showed no significant influence from color differences. Regarding frame width, a preference for 13mm was consistently observed across all participants. This preference is thought to be related to the harmony achieved with the periodic pattern inherent in the Hiwadabuki patterned panels.
