A new technique for the measurement of the fuel injection rate of a diesel engine fuel pump is developed by making use of a long test pipe and linking it to the fuel pump to be testd. When the fuel pump operates, fuel is injected into the pipe and flow transients are caused in the pipe. The pressure surges are measured to calculate and check up the flowrate through the inlet of the pipe, namely, the fuel injection rate, with the use of computer according to fluid transmission line dynamics. Not only are the basic principle but also the design method for such a measuring system presented. The technique is tested through several experiments and is showed accurate and reliable and easy to operate.
