The growing number of overseas students who come to Japan for majoring in tourism is increasing. Many of them have difficulties in learning and understanding vocabulary not to mention kanji characters. This paper examines the vocabulary and kanji characters that are needed for those who are studying tourism. And it found that the existence of distinctive compound words that are frequently used in the tourism segments as well as katakana words that are commonly accepted in the industry but not in the general public at large. Also, as to kanji characters, it found that each one of kanji characters is not specifically difficult to absorb for the students however, the vocabularies using those kanji characters are particularly characteristic.
