The terrestrial digital sound broadcasting(DSB) system of Japan was standardized in November 1999. Terrestrial DSB services are provided into the frequency bands where analog television services currently operate. For channel planning, protection ratios are required not only against DSB interference but also against analog television interference. This paper describes interference characteristics of the DSB signals by means of laboratory tests. The protection ratios were derived from the characteristics. Protection ratios against analog television interference require 29 dB, -36 dB and -38 dB for co channel, lower adjacent channel and upper adjacent channel respectively. Protection ratios among DSB signals are shown corresponding to every frequency spacing.
