The Digital versatile disc employs phase change materials and mark edge recording. The phase-change material is over-writable. The mark edge recording is used to increase the recording density in the linear direction. These marks of the heat mode recording media tend to have a tear drop or crescent shaped distortion as a result of heat accumulation. The marks create undesirable pulse asymmetry in the readout waveform. The mark edge recording allows data to be recorded on both the front or rear edges of the marks. The fluctuation of the mark edge position may cause the data jitter. It is necessary to study this waveform with the asymmetry and jitter and to develop relative signal processing to eliminate the effects of these distortions. The readback waveform of the mark edge recording is calculated and analyzed theoretically in this paper. Relative signal processing is also discussed.
