Techniques of translation, originally, were formulated in order to manage difficulties and the gap between two languages. In 1950s, Viney and Darbelnet defined the categories of the techniques of translation, and afterwards other researchers such as Nida and Newmark followed to formulate their own theories. However, they have not been argued sufficiently, especially, in case of the translation between non-English languages and Japanese. In this article, I will verify and examine my recent classification of audiovisual translation techniques concerning cultural references (Yada, 2009), applying the basic perspectives of the European semiology. Through the verification, I will make a deeper analysis on how translators usually try to manage cultural references during translation, and how the semiotic point of view helps us to better understand the process of decision-making performed by translators.
