The purpose of this paper is to examine the Japanese translation of "πíστις Ίησοῦ Χριστοῦ" in Galatians 2:16 and Romans 3:22. Traditionally "πíστις Ίησοῦ Χριστοῦ" has been regarded as objective genitive. In most of the Japanese Bible, "πíστις Ίησοῦ Χριστοῦ" is translated into "Iesu Kirisuto heno Shinkou." However, many scholars of the New Testament recently support the subjective genitive.
This paper first deals with the meaning of the Greek word "πíστις" and the grammar of the "πíστις Ίησοῦ Χριστοῦ," as well as surveying the faith in/of controversy on "πíστις Ίησοῦ Χριστοῦ". Next, I examine the current various Japanese translation. In the conclusion, I propose that "Iesu Kirisuto no Shin" is the appropriate translation of "πíστις Ίησοῦ Χριστοῦ" since the word "πíστις" includes both belief and faithfulness in Galatians 2:16 and Romans3:22.
