L. Venuti’s (1995) translation strategies, “domestication” and “foreignization” can be considered as one of the most important ideas in translation studies. These strategies are developed from ideas of F. Schleiermacher discussed in his famous lecture “Ueber die verschiedenen Methoden des Uebersezens” in 1813. A. Berman (1984/2008) who studied German Romanticists’ discourses about translation, also writes about Schleiermacher’s lecture, and Berman’s study was quoted by Venuti (1995). All of these three scholars discuss the process of translation relating it with source texts’ foreignness or strangeness. They consider foreignness has some positive effect on the translation process and target texts. By reading Berman (1984/2008), we will consider how foreignness functions in the process of translation. This paper especially focuses on Berman (1984/2008), and rereads Schleiermacher’s text from Berman’s viewpoint hoping to gain more understanding of “domesticating” and “foreignizing” strategies.
