The BFG was written in English by Roald Dahl and translated into Japanese by Taeko Nakamura. Not only its fantasy story but also the wordplay used everywhere is enjoyable and stimulates readers’ interest. Hence it would be expected to translate wordplay effectively though it is a difficult task and seems to be untranslatable. In this paper, I tried to examine how and why the wordplay was translated. The wordplay which I dealt with was as follows: name (acronym, image and portmanteau words), character (a slip of the tongue and grammar mistakes), form (rhyme and spoonerism) and pun (malapropism, misplaced words and riddles). The consequent question I tried to solve was the importance of translating wordplay; furthermore, whether and when the wordplay had priority over the message in the story.
