This paper examines English subtitles of the Japanese film Departures, focusing on strategies for translating culture-specific items (CSIs) in the film. First, it discusses various typologies of translation strategies and presents Pedersen’s classifications (2011) as the framework of the present study. Next, examples of CSIs in the Japanese dialogues and their English subtitles are examined, with the translation strategies used in the subtitles identified. Based on the analysis of the nature and frequencies of the strategies, it is observed that the strategies for translating Japanese CSIs in Departures are both source-oriented and target-oriented. Further research is needed to see whether this mixed orientation can also be seen in English subtitles of other Japanese films, and to examine social and other factors which may influence the translator’s decisions in choosing strategies.
