Abstract

A 60-year-old male who had influenza-related methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) pneumonia and respiratory failure was transferred to our hospital. He was treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). On day 2 after admission, peripheral blood examination showed a markedly decreased platelet count ; therefore, we decided to wean him from ECMO on day 5. Although he was weaned from ventilator support on day 12, chronic respiratory failure persisted. During ECMO management, accurate decision-making regarding weaning is necessary to achieve a balance lung protection and the risk of bleeding complication.
