The purpose of this study is to clarify substantial origin of long slump in electronics business starting from 1998 at Sony Corporation. This study hypothesizes the origin exists Sony's strategic change implemented by Sony's successive top executive in securing de facto standard and enhancing diversification between 1981 and 1983. In order to verify this hypothesis, the logic of Sony's management philosophy is compared with the actual contents of competitive strategy during this period. Through the comparison, it is verified the competitive strategy undertaken by Sony's successive top executive have a logical disagreement with Sony's management philosophy in terms of successor's aim at big enterprise, enhancement of diversification management, profit maximization, and de facto standardization strategy changing to disclose product architecture. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the direction of Sony's competitive strategy promoted by successive top executive is logically opposite to Sony founder's management philosophy.
