Since 1996, Japanese corporations have been rocked by scandals. So after the bursting of Japan's "bubble economy," there has been a call for a fresh look at corporate values. However, to accomplish this it would require an attitude of conformance to business ethics on the parts of both organizations and individuals. The string of corporate scandals also leads to the conclusion that fairness is an essential requirement for all corporate activities. When reflecting on our changing times, one sees that the business ethics of each company-as well as the implementation of those ethics at all company levels-are prerequisites for securing the desired atmosphere of fairness. This paper presents a rethinking of company values in terms of business ethics and corporate governance, especially from the perspective of self-governance. At the same time, it also presents implications and advice regarding the future direction of Japanese corporations.
