Abstract

The aim of this study was to clarify the current state of critical care practice and learning in hospital wards, as perceived by nurses responsible for education. A web-based survey was conducted with 712 nurse educators working in medical institutions equipped with intensive care units (ICUs) and emergency centers. The survey collected and analyzed data on the frequency of clinical practice, learning satisfaction, teaching methods, and the challenges faced in education. The findings indicated that while learning was relatively well developed in areas of routine care, there were significant gaps in education and awareness regarding the prevention of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS), sepsis management, and ventilator use―topics deemed essential for continued care in general wards. Major challenges identified by educators included insufficient support systems, limited learning opportunities, and difficulties in securing qualified teaching personnel. To address these issues, the development of comprehensive educational support systems is necessary to meet the growing demands of critical care practice beyond specialized units.
