Abstract

The traditional craft industry is generally thought to be shrinking. However, a close examination of statistical data reveals that there are some industries where shipment and export values have begun to rise since around 2010. One such field is the cutlery industry. Why have some traditional craft industries revitalized while others are in decline?

This paper examines the current situation of the cutlery industry and the factors behind its turnaround to revival based on quantitative and qualitative research. The results revealed the evolution of the local production ecosystem with the new players and the successor training system. It is also clarified that the government’s export promotion and intellectual property policies have been effective in increasing shipments and exports.
