Abstract
This study investigates the objectives and organization of introductory foreign language education in Japanese universities. A web survey was conducted across 31 universities, supplemented by interviews with administrators from nine institutions. The findings indicate that while introductory foreign language education continues to be classified as part of general education, it is increasingly being reexamined as a required subject in various colleges. This research provides a foundation for future discussions on quality assurance and highlights the importance of establishing shared educational objectives.
