An important condition for the development of towns which offer rich environments for comfortable lifestyles to residents is the enjoyment of the history and culture which embody the character of a particular region . In this paper, the authors examine "regional matsuri (festivals)" as a way of comparing the relative potential for cultural succession of different regions . Taking geographical environment as an axis of comparison, the authors analyze the structure and historical changes of matsuri, and look for the relationship between these and the cultural elements which have been succeeded in matsuri.

The harsher the geographical environment of a region is, the older the origin of its matsuri and the smaller the probability of interruption of matsuri at sometime in the past are. Moreover, in such regions, the number of participants from distant areas is greater, as is the number of unique elements in the matsuri which have been succeeded. The majority of matsuri which began after the Second World War are held in summer to increase the participation of local residents . The potential for cultural succession is greatly influenced by both the geographical environment and the managing method of matsuri.
