In the global era, language skills are considered a fundamental competency underlying all areas of learning. This study investigates the relationship between Japanese language literacy and academic English proficiency by utilizing the Reading Skill Test (RST) and the TOEFL Junior (TJ). The analysis reveals a strong correlation between TJ scores and performance across five core subjects (Japanese, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and English), as well as with specific ability scores measured by RST. These findings suggest that language skills are not confined to language subjects but function as a common foundation required for learning across all academic disciplines.
