Abstract

This practical report is aimed at presenting the progress of implementation of a newly-introduced TOEIC® 600 score requirement for the fourth-year curriculum in the School of Marine Science of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, and examining the current situations in depth with analysis of students’ achievements as of July 15, 2016. First, the author explains circumstances under which the institution has decided to introduce the TOEIC® 600 score requirement for the fourth-year curriculum. Next, the author illustrates the TOEIC educational curriculum in progress with a variety of data. Finally, the author critiques the curriculum and proposes suggestions to the discussed problems for improvement of the curriculum. Although the final outcome of first-time implementation of the TOEIC® 600 score requirement will not be obtained until the end of 2016 academic year, the report attempts to explore the best practices possible and shed light on problems and concerns of requiring a certain score of English proficiency tests, such as TOEIC®, of university students without exception.
