Potency of Public Cemetery in Indonesia as an Alternative Public Space

The rate of population growth in Indonesia is increasing every year. Uneven economic distribution causing the outflow of rural population to the city, which then implicated for the high land conversion into settlement. Unfortunately the land conversion is not followed with an increased the quantity of public space. Comparison of population and number of public spaces is no longer balanced, it is necessary for a new public space. Public Cemetery considered to have potency as an alternative new public space. Based on the six criteria for the ideal public space (Siahaan, 2010), public cemetery has four criteria, namely image and identity, tranquility, flexible design and accessibility. Based on people's need in public space: comfort, relaxation, passive engagement with the environment, active engagement with the environment and discover (Car, 1992), public cemetery has three criteria, namely comfort, relaxation and passive engagement with the environment. With the presence of some of the criteria for good public space in public cemetery, i can be concluded that the public cemetery has a great potential to be used as public space.
