Abstract
Japanese immigrants to Brazil developed a type of Japanese with such specific characteristics that we can call it a variety of Japanese language. This variety has, as one of its most marked features, the use of lexical borrowing from Brazilian Portuguese and resulted out of the contact that the immigrants had with the same on their arrival in Brazil. This borrowing from Brazilian Portuguese shows some differences in the way it is integrated into Japanese, i.e., when compared with how the inclusion of other borrowed terms occurs in Japan. The way in which borrowing occurs - the frequency of Portuguese interjections, borrowing according to addressee, metaphorical borrowing, among others - not only represents speakers' identity but has become one of the "strategies" that leads to fluent communication.
