Abstract
This study examines how Japanese who emigrated to Canada around 1900 borrowed words from English to Japanese. Section 2 begins with a brief overview of the history of Japanese-Canadians. Section 3 compares the syllable structure of the two languages and summarizes the mechanism through which a vowel is epenthesized to avoid an illicit consonant cluster in modern Japanese. Section 4 presents the results of the analyses of loanword tokens collected from their manuscripts, focusing on vowel epenthesis. Section 5 outlines directions for future research.
