We developed a simplified obturator prosthesis with duplicated artificial teeth for restoring the quality of life (QOL) of patients who have undergone a partial maxillectomy in the postoperative early stage. In this paper, we describe specific procedures for fabricating the prosthesis through the clinical course of a patient to whom it was applied. The patient was a 67-year-old woman who had undergone a partial maxillectomy, and the HS classification of her maxillary defect was H3S0D0T0. The time taken to fabricate the prosthesis was about 4 hours, and it could be worn from 10 days after a partial maxillectomy. A delay-type autopolymerizing resin was selected as the main material of the prosthesis, and we could significantly shorten its fabricating time. The weight of the prosthesis was only 15g, and it could be used for 9 months without any complications until completion of the final prosthesis. The assessments using the visual analog scale (0-100) for masticatory and swallowing function, ease of cleaning, aesthetics, and wearability were more than 90. Also, the conversational intelligibility was 1 (good intelligibility). Based on these results, our simplified obturator prosthesis would greatly contribute to the early recovery of QOL and reintegration of patients who have undergone a partial maxillectomy.
